Plot Synopsis
James Toback's (Fingers) gripping and compelling documentary is the story of Tyson's troubled life, as hero and villain. With unprecedented access, Toback's film sees Tyson talk about his life to the camera, and cuts the 30 hours of footage to give an insight into the way the former heavyweight champion sees the world.
He talks about his rape conviction, money problems and religion. The only voice in the documentary is Tyson's, which is occasionally interspersed with previous Tyson boxing footage.
A pigeon-fancying Brooklyn street-fighter, he was surely destined for a life behind bars. Luckily, he found a coach, Cus D'Amato, who acted as his mentor and father figure; after he died, his own decline seems inevitable.
Mike Tyson has knocked out countless pretenders. In fact he has absolutely no idea just how famous he is and Toback's approach gives him the opportunity to explain himself, doing so with admirable honesty and self-awareness. He seems now to deserve the peaceful middle age he will probably never get...
