The Cabinet of Dr Caligari Workshop

The workshops are designed to raise appreciation and understanding of the skills involved in composing and performing music to support a silent film.

Attendees will be introduced to the methods used by Cipher and will include:

  • capturing the mood
  • developing themes
  • developing a ‘sound world’
  • marking ‘cues’
  • developing a score
  • using improvisation
  • performing

 

The workshops are aimed at people who are 14 or over and have a musical ability or an interest in music for film

The workshop will last for 1½ hours and will involve composing and performing music to a scene from The Cabinet of Dr Caligari.

Cipher are:

Theo Travis – Sax, flutes, keyboards, loops
Dave Sturt – Fretless + Upright bass,  loops, soundscapes

Cipher have performed live with silent films since 1996, having written and performed contemporary scores for Hitchcock's The Lodger, Pabst’s Pandora’s Box , The Last Laugh and The Phantom of the Opera.

Cipher have also released three CDssince 1999 which have received excellent reviews in the UK, Italy, the USA and Germany
