Plot Synopsis

A powerful family saga that became one of the biggest critical and box-office hits of recent Italian cinema, has evolved into a significant landmark.
Beginning in 1966 and continuing to the present, The Best of Youth follows a middle- class Roman family, the Caratis. The first half explores the cultural and political convulsions of 1960s and 70s Italy. In the second half, the charismatic and intelligent main characters Matteo and Nicola Carati struggle sometimes successfully, sometimes tragically, to create their own families. Seamlessly weaving together personal and national histories and taking many wonderful side trips, The Best of Youth provides a tapestry of 20th century Italy. Giordana has crafted an eloquent and emotional achievement in film-making not seen since Francis Ford Coppola ’s The Godfather .
"This compelling drama rewards the investment of one's time. Choose this over any 3 summer blockbusters" i-d magazine
