Plot Synopsis
Making its way from Paris to Lisbon, the Sud Express carries passengers in search of love, work or just a lucky break. Six interlinked stories provide a commentary on lives touched in some way by the train or its journey through the different countries of this corner of Western Europe. At Paris' Austerlitz station Samuel (Gerald Morales) picks up passengers but his banter masks a deeper malaise. In the Portuguese village of Santana, Tino (Tino Guimaraes) and his brother Joao (Fernando Tavares) bicker in desperation at their frustrating co-habitation. Close to Salamanca, Rober (Javier Delgado) and his friend Isa (Pilar Borrego) are trying to collect signatories for a petition while Julián (Juanma Hernández) and Luis Antonio (Miguel Martín) load up their 4x4 for a day's shooting in the countryside. In Northern Spain, Rashid (Hicham Malayo) makes plans to visit his French girlfriend. In Lisbon, Mili (German A. Joao) struggles to make ends meet selling watches and dreams of a better life. Shot in five languages with a largely non-professional cast, Chema de la Peña and Gabriel Velázquez's accomplished feature offers a challenging perspective on a new Europe of collapsing national borders. Sud Express is a witty, compassionate, and beautifully crafted feature that gives a whole new dimension to the term 'trainspotting'.
