Plot Synopsis

A neo-Nazi skinhead awaits trial in present-day Montreal after kicking to death an Indian shopkeeper in an unprovoked attack. The lawyer defending him is Jewish. Where do these two men go from here? That’s the premise of this provocative Canadian feature starring Oscar-nominee David Strathairn (Good Night and Good Luck). As middle-aged lawyer Danny Dunkelman, Strathairn manages the tricky task of portraying a secular, liberal Jew forced to re-address his views on race and identity shaped by a good education and comfortable, middle-class life in a thriving multicultural city. A startling performance by Andrew Walker as the indoctrinated yet articulate skinhead lends further credibility to the central characters' clash of creeds, and Steel Toes does not shy away from the big questions. In the words of writer and co-director David Gow, “when we encounter evil in humankind do we try to kill or cure that evil?”
