Same Sex America (tbc)

  • Run time: 1 hour 30 mins
  • Genre: Documentary
  • Release date: 1st January 2005

Plot Synopsis

Massachusetts became the first state in the US to sanction same-sex marriage in February 2004. The US Supreme Court could reverse this in 2006. However this sensitive documentary celebrates the real lives of a diverse group of people as they take full advantage of their new rights.

The vantage-point here is twofold. As we listen to traditional marriage advocates voice their concerns in protest; we follow several same-sex couples as they plan wedding ceremonies.

Invitations are selected, dresses tried on, and receptions organised. The couples range from young professionals and established middle-class members to senior couples brimming with long-delayed joy. Some are childless, while others are raising children from earlier marriages or adoption. All are thrilled about their chance to pioneer a social shift even in the face of considerable controversy.

At times this accomplished documentary is down right scary because of prejudice and ignorance however against all the odds the film is also uplifting and joyous. Do you cry at weddings?
