Plot Synopsis

Irene is a dynamic real estate entrepreneur, whose next project is to take a building, long owned and previously occupied by her family, and turn it into a modern apartment block. The last occupant of the building was her mother, of whom Irene remembers little as she died when she was still a very young girl. Intrigued by the perfectly preserved apartments and after an encounter with Benny a street tomboy who lives nearby, Irene's ordered and ruthlessly efficient world begins to fall apart. Much to the chagrin of her domineering aunt, Irene begins to neglect her business and simultaneously explore the life of her little known mother and the people who live around the old building. Irene's voyage of discovery is much more than a historical exercise, it is a spiritual journey that leads her to reject her comfortable existence with provocative and disturbing consequences. An unusual and supremely assured film that is part ghost story, part psychological drama, from the director of Ignorant Fairies and Facing Window that is illuminated by a bravura central performance from Barbora Bobulova, that has already seen her receive Best Actress awards in both the Italian David di Donatello ceremony and the 2005 European Golden Globes.
