Plot Synopsis

A magical, tender film to watch with someone dear to you and that catches your heart with the wonder of first love. In a genre all of its own, WHISPER OF THE HEART is the story of book-loving, 15-year-old Shizuku, trying to find her direction in life. Following a particularly fat and self-assured cat onto a tram, she discovers a mysterious old man in a shop filled with curios, whose grandson dreams of making violins and with whom she develops a tentative relationship. His passion inspires her to find her own path, and while he visits Italy to apprentice to his craft, Shizuku devotes herself to writing a novel of fantastical romance, which crackles through the golden warmth of the film like lightning on a summer day. Warmed throughout by John Denver's 'Take Me Home, Country Roads', Miyazaki's wise script will enchant and elate you, and the charming realism of the Japanese cityscape will delight - watch the reflections in the glass of moving tram windows and marvel at the grace of this hand-drawn animation.
