Plot Synopsis

Shooting in smog-bound Kuala Lumpur, Tsai casts Lee Kang-Sheng as two characters, one of whom is probably dreaming the other. The dreamer is a man in a coma, the beloved son of a coffee-shop owner, the dreamed is Kang, a visitor to the city, who is robbed, beaten and left for dead.

Kang is rescued by Rawang, a Bangladeshi worker who lets him sleep beside him on an old mattress that he had found on the street. Later, when Chyi, a waitress at a coffee-shop, meets Kang, she is filled with lustful desire. As Kang slowly recovers, he finds himself caught between Rawang and Chyi – as well as Chyi’s female boss. Meanwhile, a heavy haze of humidity descends on the city. These men and women and the old mattress lose their way in the haze but find one another…
