Plot Synopsis

Having been forced to witness the superior noir drama CROPUPIER go under-appreciated in the UK (a successful US release belatedly alerted us to its charms) British auteur Mike Hodges (GET CARTER, THE TERMINAL MAN) should not have to suffer the same fate twice with his latest picture, I’LL SLEEP WHEN I’M DEAD. Another Melvillian crime ‘thriller’ with existential overtones, Hodges again draws a stunning performance of shading and subtlety from (Coventry lad!) Clive Owen as Will Graham, a former London crime lord now living in anonymous obscurity in Wales. The death of Graham’s brother (Rhys Meyers, VELVET GOLDMINE) in mysterious circumstances brings the one-time gangster back to familiar haunts in search of first answers and then, inevitably revenge. A film that refuses to offer either pat characterisation or bow to narrative convention, I’LL SLEEP WHEN I’M DEAD is an atmospheric and thrillingly audacious work which offers confirmation of the talents of one of this country’s finest and most accomplished film-makers." - Birmingham Screen Festival
"The British gangster film is a great film tradition, and I cite, The Blue Lamp Robbery, Peeping Tom, Long Good Friday, Sexy Beast, Mona Lisa, The Krays, Lock Stock, Snatch, Croupier and Mike Hodges latest I’ll Sleep when I’m Dead... A moviegoers delight." - David Mamet - The Guardian
"Hodges gives the last decade’s worth of London gangster films a reviving twist." - Jonathan Romney, The Independent on Sunday
"A superb piece of Modern Noir" - Uncut
