Plot Synopsis
Hidden is at once a nail-biting psychological thriller and a philosophical inquiry into the act of watching, the predicament of being watched, and the lies we tell each other and ourselves - but that's just scratching the surface. Daniel Auteuil plays Georges, a TV literary critic whose family starts receiving mysterious packages - videotapes suggesting that his wife Anne (Juliette Binoche) and their son Pierrot are being closely watched. As Georges' anxiety rises, he sets out to find out who's behind this apparent threat campaign, and ends up unearthing some uneasy secrets. This is a film to watch closely, and one that leaves you to decide for yourself what's really at stake in the drama (its final shot caused more debate in Cannes this year than most films on show did in their entirety). Masterly and rigorously intelligent, Hidden shows its leads on top form, with a powerful support performance from Maurice Bénichou. Haneke continues to be one of those film-makers you can't afford to ignore, and Hidden is perhaps his most subtly provocative film yet.
