Plot Synopsis
A huge box office hit in Germany lauded as ‘a revival of the German-Jewish comedy’.
A bittersweet satirical comedy based on the relationship between Jews and non-Jews in Germany. Jaeckie Zuckermann (Henry Hubchen) drinks and gambles his way through life. The only hope left, for this former GDR sports reporter, is his mother’s inheritance. In her will, however, she has stipulated that Jaeckie must reconcile his differences with his brother Samuel, an orthodox Jew, before he can claim the money. Director Dani Levy challenges the perception that Jewish rituals in Germany cannot be seen as different or even humorous as he presents a hilarious view of both Jewish and non-Jewish stereotypes and their incompatibilities.
Winner of the Ernst Lubitsch Award, 2005, for best German comedy.
Best picture, director and actor in the German Film Awards (Bundesfilmpreis).
