Plot Synopsis
The Armenia captured through the poetic lens of documentary filmmaker Alexander Gutman is a country of stone, of towering mountains, and solemn grave markers. The hard landscape, however, is no match for the strength of its people. Shot in Giumril, a city devastated by an earthquake in 1988 shortly before Armenia won its independence, Frescoes offers a powerful portrait of a nation digging out and moving on. Through the measured lives of Varuzh, a young boy awaiting his baptism, and Garnik, an elderly gravedigger approaching another birthday, Gutman finds the deep connections between everyday scenes-a crowded market, children at play, glasses raised for a toast-and the soul of a people.
