Plot Synopsis

Earlier this year Steven Soderbergh's Section Eight production company signed a radical deal which secured finance for six films to be shot on hi-def video and released simultaneously in American movie theatres, on DVD and on television. Bubble is the first of these films, written and directed by Soderbergh, shot with a cast of non-professionals and a verité feel. In blue collar Ohio, Martha and Kyle both work at the local doll factory, and are best buddies. When an attractive young woman is recruited to the production line, Martha sees her friend falling for the newcomer's more obvious charms... Ostensibly a murder mystery, Bubble is also a very fine piece of social observation, showing the lives of American people just getting by: Martha cares for her elderly father and sews piece work at home in the evenings; Kyle holds down two jobs to make a living; Rose cleans houses after her shift at the factory is finished. With Bubble it feels like we're watching real people, because of course we are - albeit real people directed by Steven Soderbergh. If that weren't recommendation enough, there's the added attraction of a fitting original score, written by Guided By Voices' Robert Pollard.
