Plot Synopsis

Nominated for 6 BAFTAS on its original release, John Schlesinger’s BILLY LIAR is based on the hit play by Keith Waterhouse and is now widely acknowledged as one of the seminal British New Wave films made in the early 1960s.

Billy leads a monotonous existence as a clerk in an undertaker’s office, engaged to two insufferable women whilst idolizing a third, and living at home with parents who constantly nag and berate him to conform.

Despite a vivid fantasy life in which he casts himself as a succession of daring men of action, Billy seemingly lacks the conviction to follow through on these dreams and make something of his life.
