Plot Synopsis
‘Afro-Saxons’ follows an eclectic selection of four Afro-hair salons over an eight month period as the stylists prepare for the most prestigious date in the calendar: the Black Beauty Hair Awards.
Wayne and Cyndia at the bustling South London chain ‘Hype Coiffure’ are the young contenders hoping to win the best Newcomer Award. When Cyndia's model lets her down at the Hype in-house competition, Wayne wins the first prize - sponsorship to enter his work into the Black Beauty Awards. If Cyndia wants to go for it, she will have to pay for the photoshoot herself. Angela Plummer runs her intimate and painstaking braiding business ‘Sour 2 Sweet’ from her living room in a Tottenham council flat. But Angela's humble premises belies a celebrity clientele including Oona King, Felix Dexter and Usher. If she wins Braid Stylist of The Year again this year she will enter the Black Beauty 'Hall of Fame'. However it seems that the only person who can stop her is Anastasia Chikeze - who has a full salon behind her and more prestigious celebrity clientele. Thai couple George and Apple Kosit of Peckham's ‘Kosit Hair and Beauty’ will only style Afro hair - European hair is too boring. Apple only started hairdressing five years ago when she left her accountancy career in Thailand to start a life with George in London. They tend to win every competition they enter much to the annoyance of the other stylists. Obsessed with competing, they are members of Great Britain's National Hairdressing Team, representing the country in the Afro hair category of international competitions. Now, Apple is fast becoming one of the best hairdressers in the industry and George is beginning to feel that his biggest competition may come from within his own salon.
In Birmingham, Michael Wilson and Angela Foster strive to take the "Stylist Of The Year" trophy out of London. They each manage a branch of "Revolution Hair Design" and share photoshoots. However, family problems stop Michael from competing for the big prize. Can his ego allow Angela to still go for it?
'Afro Saxons' follows the four salons through their photoshoots, the Afro Hair and Beauty Show at Alexandra Palace, competitions in Moscow and Paris and finally to London's Hilton Metropole for a star-studded Black Beauty Awards ceremony.
